Affected gene: EDA
Inheritance: X-linked recessive
Mutation: CanFam3.1 X g.54511433G>A c.910-1G>AOMIA link: 000543-9615
Appropriate breeds for testing: German Shepherd, Shiloh Shepherd, White Swiss Shepherd
Symptoms:
Dogs with ectodermal dysplasia are born with a hairless forehead and dorsal pelvic area, have reduced or absent sweat glands and many of the teeth are absent or malformed. If canines are present, they are thinner than normal and point outwards. Affected dogs are more susceptible to infectious lung diseases than normal dogs. Chronic nasal and ocular discharge are common, as are corneal ulcerations.
